The New York Yankees have signed third baseman Jeimer Candelario to a minor league contract.
In 2023, Candelario recorded 22 home runs and 70 RBIs with a .251/.336/.471 batting line, between his time with the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs.
He then signed a three-year, $45 million deal with the Cincinnati Reds. In 2024, he had a solid offensive campaign with 20 home runs and 56 RBIs; he did see a steep decline in both batting average (.225) and on-base percentage (.279), though.
Candelario’s regression continued this season, as he had a concerning .113/.198/.213 batting line in 22 games before being designated for assignment by Cincinnati.
The Yankees are taking a low-risk, high-reward bet for the 31-year-old to regain form. New York started off the season strong, but limped to a 3-7 record over their last 10 games.
